If you’re a political junkie, writing conservative articles online can be a lucrative way to earn extra cash. However, you need to make sure you are getting paid fairly for your work. Whether you’re interested in writing an academic article, an op-ed piece or a political fiction story, there are many publications that will pay you for your work.
The Washington Examiner
If you want to write conservative op-ed pieces, the Washington Examiner is the place to start. Their guidelines state that op-eds should be under 700 words and should focus on policy. The pay rate is not disclosed, but I’ve seen reports of writers earning anywhere from $50 to $1000 per article.
Foreign Policy
If your political interests lie in international politics, you might enjoy writing for Foreign Policy. This publication accepts nonfiction and poetry on a wide range of topics. Its editor-in-chief, Danielle Nicholson, says they are looking for articles that “appeal to readers from around the world.”
Informed Comment
If you’re passionate about the environment and social justice, you might enjoy writing for Informed Comment. They accept political and global issues, including human rights, religion, climate change, workers’ rights and women’s rights. They accept online articles at 800 to 1,000 words and print pieces of 1,500 to 2,000 words.
The Atlantic
If the left is more your style, you might consider writing for the Atlantic. This publication is renowned for its high-brow aesthetic, but it does occasionally publish political articles as well. Its submission guidelines are quite detailed, so it’s worth checking out if you’re considering writing for them.
Salon
Another magazine that’s slightly left-leaning, Salon is a great place to pitch your ideas. Their guidelines are very detailed and they say that you can build a good relationship with the editors if you’re successful.
The New Republic
If you love nonfiction and want to write about a political subject, The New Republic is a good place to start. Their guidelines are more strict than some other publications, but they do pay for articles.
POLITICO
If you’re an expert on a specific topic or policy, the POLITICO website might be for you. Their writers cover everything from cannabis to space and immigration, so it’s a good place to find an outlet for your political work.
The Progressive
As the name suggests, The Progressive is a left-leaning publication. They love investigative reporting and have a special focus on social movements and activism. If you’re an experienced writer, you might want to pitch them on political articles or even poetry (though these are more likely to be accepted if they’re related to social justice).
